The University of Johannesburg’s Doornfontein Campus is located in Johannesburg CBD, on the borders of Hillbrow, Betrams and New Doornfontein. Being historically what was called Wits Tech, this is a sciences campus with engineering and built environment courses. The Adowa Ellis Park Student Village is located within 50m of this campus. As the sciences are very campus centric (with laboratories and use of other equipment), this student village is in a prime location to offer students easy access between their home-away-from-home and campus. Late nights on campus do not have to be a security risk as the Adowa security can accompany students to and from campus within organized hours.

The property is Adowa’s largest accommodation campus, with a total number of student beds of 2 119, of which 1 047 will come online in the 2022 academic year. Phase 2 and Phase 3 are expected to come online in academic years 2023 and 2024 respectively with the balance of the beds.

Being quite a sizeable property, the Ellis Park Student Village gives students a wider base of amenities and common areas, especially in terms of study areas and free wifi allocations to allow access to both the internet and the university’s intranet. The sciences can be grueling in terms of course content, and students need all the support they can get in areas to study and connectivity. The village will have, on completion of all the phases, 24 common areas, the majority of which will house spaces for quiet study, tutoring and libraries.

Adowa aims for the property to be a real student village, offering various activities on the outside shared spaces and the rooftop. The building is a seven storey development and provides beautiful views of the Johannesburg skyline, with the requisite security and safety measures.

True to the Adowa design philosophy, the Ellis Park Student Village also has rooms set up in apartment like units that foster the family unit. Each unit constitutes bedrooms toilets and bathrooms and a shared kitchen between the 8 students. The kitchen is fully equipped with a refrigerator, a microwave and a four plate electric stove. Students are given individual lockers for cupboard space, allowing for secure storage.

Each bedroom has sufficient cupboard space for each student, a desk and chair for studying and an electric wall heater. Double rooms have a middle partition that gives each student privacy without isolating the roommates from each other.

The building is certified by the Green Building Council and has implemented different systems that ensure energy efficiency and environmental friendliness, including the use of heat pumps for water heating.
